TIME TO HANG #10

The Hershey Bears, the longest and proudest franchise in the American Hockey League, are now the greatest franchise in the history of the 73 year old hockey league. On Friday June 12, the Bears defeated the Manitoba Moose 4-1 to win the Calder Cup Finals 4 games to 2. This championship was their 10th all time and 2nd in 4 years.

Another One Bites The Dust....

It has been reported that LA Dodgers left-fielder Manny Ramirez has been suspended 50 games for testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.

...No wonder the Dodgers are 13-0 at home right now!!!

Obama decimates Women's basketball team in PIG

In a game of PIG at the White House, President Obama single-handedly owned the UConn women's basketball team, talking trash the whole time.  There's a reason he's president and they're not.

In other news, I can't believe I'm tagging a post with "Sports."

Stanley Cup Playoffs Start Tonight...

The best tournament in sports, in my opinion, kicks off tonight and that is the quest for Lord Stanley's Cup.

Well, here is my hopeful prediction for sports' most sought after trophy: Washington Capitals defeat San Jose Sharks in the finals in 6 games. Offer your predictions if you choose.

Prison Night at the Good Ole Hockey Game *UPDATE*

Following up my previous post, the uniforms for the game have now been released. Even the referees are taking part! I think it's extremely clever and I for one am excited at least one game is taking part in the mockery! The jerseys are shown below:

It's Ravens Time

Stumbled upon this poem in reference to festivus, the term Baltimoreans affectionately use to refer to playoff season in the Charm City, and just had to share.
And on that note:
IT'S RAVENS TIME!!!!!!!

Twas the night before Festivus, when all through Charm City

Ravens fans were stirring and even felt giddy.
The jerseys were hung by the chimney with flare,
In hopes that Joe Flacco soon would be there.

The fans were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of the playoffs danced in their heads.
And when we awoke and January 10 was the date,
We just settled down for a winter's tailgate,

When out in the end zone there arose such a clatter,
The opponent looked over to see what was the matter.
In a huddle of players that looked like a flash,
The Ravens looked ready for a hard-hitting clash.

The season had boiled down to one single game
as the players were looking for more than just fame,
And what to my wondering eyes looked intense,
For it was Ray Lewis...and the Baltimore defense.

A terrifying unit, so lively and quick,
They'll hit you, they'll haunt you, or even grab the pick.
More rapid than wolves these hunters they came,
And Ray whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"T-Sizzle! now, JJ! now, Bannan, Haloti!
On, Trevor! on Leonhard! on, Reed and Samari!
To the top of the mountain! to the top of the hill!
Knock them out! Get the ball! Now in for the kill!"

And then, the offense, led by a menacing line,
Came onto the field and was ready to fly.
A three-headed monster was at running back,
led by McClain, a big rumbling mack.

And Mason the veteran, with his shoulder so sore,
Kept reining in passes, one, two, three, more!
And finally, a sight so perfect, so new;
a quarterback to be proud of, a little like Johnny U.

Joe Flacco was ready to take the city by storm,
his cannon for an arm much better than norm,
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And led them downfield, the fans going berserk.

The Ravens were ready to give such a gift
to the fans of Baltimore who needed the lift.
Coach Harbaugh exclaimed, while his team looked so sleek,
"Happy Festivus to all, and we'll see you next week."

(Thanks to BaltimoreSun.com blogger "Purple Sunday" for the poem!)

Prison Night At The Good Ole' Hockey Game?

Yes, it is true. If anyone will be in Vegas on Jan. 30th.... make it out to the ECHL game between the Las Vegas Wranglers and the Victoria Salmon Kings. The Wranglers will be wearing special "prison uniform" style jerseys in 'honor' of recently disgraced Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich.

Read more about it here

....after the game happens, if I can find pictures.... I will follow up with a new post featuring them.

Yup - it totally is...

The Curse Is Broken....

As a die-hard sports fan, I couldn't sleep tonight before I posted this:

The "curse of William Penn" is broken, 25 years after the city's last sports championship and 28 years and 9 days since the last world series championship, the Philadelphia Phillies are the 2008 World Series Champions!

University of Notre Dame Not Racist After All?

So it seems that when the Notre Dame football program fired Tyrone Willingham a few years ago, they weren't doing it in an act of racism, but because he just isn't that great of a head coach.

Now, Willingham will gain a 1 million dollar buyout at the end of the season, being relieved of his duties at the University of Washington today after starting the year 0-7 and losing, ironically enough, to Notre Dame this past Saturday.

.....I'm just happy this is one chapter of a book that can finally be ended.

Also, for those getting caught up in World Series "phever"...... game 5 will be resumed Tuesday evening, weather permitting. Phillies and Rays tied at 2.

Whiny wrestler tosses medal in disgust

It seems that we have reached the height of childish behavior in what is supposed to be the ultimate in sportsmanship. Swedish wrestler Ara Abrahamian threw his bronze medal on the floor during the medal presentation before storming off. His coach complained that the fact that his wrestler lost was all politics. I guess the Chinese gymnasts aren't the only babies in the Olympics.

China puts best foot forward, crushes small child's dreams...

"A little girl and her song captivated millions of viewers during the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. But what they saw was not what they heard.

Games organizers confirm that Lin Miaoke, who performed "Ode to the Motherland" as China's flag was paraded Friday into Beijing's National Stadium, was not singing at all."

Wow, China...

UPDATE: More falsehoods present in what was thought to be the one of the best, if not the best, Opening Ceremonies in history.

http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/08/12/fake.fireworks.ap/index.html

"Beijing organizers confirmed Tuesday that some of the fireworks display featured prerecorded footage.

Fireworks that burst into the shape of 29 gigantic footprints were shown trudging above the Beijing skyline to the National Stadium near the start of the ceremony.

Though the footprint-shaped fireworks were real, some of the footage shown to television viewers around the world and on giant screens inside the "Bird's Nest" stadium featured a computer-generated three-dimensional image."

Michael Phelps is the Incredible Hulk

Not really, but he won his second swimming gold medal of the 2008 Summer Games in a thriller of a 4x100 relay.

"Few sporting events live up to the hype -- this one exceeded it. The 32-year-old [American Jason] Lezak was nearly a body length behind [Frenchman Alain] Bernard as they made the final turn, but the American hugged the lane rope and stunningly overtook him on the very last stroke."
